Turbo fuel stratified injection (TFSI)

Audi was the first manufacturer to combine petrol direct injection with the turbocharger in large scale production. The 2.0 TFSI started its success story in the summer of 2004 making its debut in Audi A3 sport.

Turbo fuel stratified injection denotes a type of forced aspiration engine where the fuel is pressure injected straight into the combustion chamber in such a way to create stratified charge. A stratified engine is type of IC engine, in which fuel is injected to the cylinder just before ignition to allow higher compression ratio.

Compare to conventional V6 naturally aspirated engines the super charge 4 cylinder unit direct injection saves 10-15% of power to the same performance values. FSI technology therefore compliments turbocharging excellently, because the evaporation of the fuel in the combustion chamber directly removes heat from the fresh air drawn in. This allows an increase in compression and clearly improves the efficiency also it solves the old problem of Turbo engines i.e. the strong inclination to knock at high degrees of supercharging.

The integrated manifold exhaust gas turbo charger module ensures optimum efficiency of the turbine and therefore utilization of exhaust energy. This means high performance and optimum response can be achieved in equal measure. Ultimately this helps to reduce fuel consumption and exhaust emissions effectively. In combination with the turbocharger FSI technology has superior potential and more performance in dynamic at lower consumption.
